• 1. Looking back over your life, think for a few moments about any small “victories” you’ve had. List them below:

~ Athletic accomplishments

~ Academic achievements

~ Martial milestones

~ Career triumphs

• 2. To what do you attribute those victories? (Don’t be cocky or overly modest!)

 

Lesson Questions:

• 1. First John 5:1 lists two characteristics of an overcomer. What are they?
• 2. There is a third characteristic of an over comer (vv. 2-3). What is it?
• 3. Looking back over this short passage, what terms and phrases did John repeat? Why this repetition?
• 4. What did John mean by his statement that God’s commands are not “burdensome” (v. 3)?
• 5. According to John, what is the way to become an overcomer?

Exploring the Meaning:

• 6. Why was Jesus so confident that He had overcome the world?
• 7. What further light does Jesus’ teaching above shed on John’s teaching in 5:1, 5?
• 8. Did John suggest that all believers are overcomers, or only a few “super Christians”? How do you know?
• 9. What is the difference between saving faith and intellectual belief?

• 10. Would you describe most of the Christians you know as “victorious overcomers”? Why or why not?
• 11. Do you really have faith in and believe that Jesus is the Son of God? Why?
• 12. It is often said that the children of God have three great enemies. What steps will you take to “overcome” in the following areas?

~ The “flesh”

~ The “devil”
